Factors to consider when buying a new central heating system
Buying a new boiler can be tricky; there are so many different types on the market and they can vary dramatically in price and performance.
Combination, condensing, gas or oil, it can be a daunting prospect when you don’t really understand what you need and you certainly don’t understand the terminology.
To help with this included below are some helpful hints for things to consider when buying your new boiler and central heating system, which should make things a little easier:
- Size matters - it is important to find out what output a boiler needs for your house. This will include: how many radiators you have; the size of your house; how many bathrooms you have; the age of your home; the insulation in your home; whether you have double glazing; and how high your ceilings are.
- Have you made any energy efficiency changes to your home since the last boiler was put in? For example insulation and draft proofing? If you have, this will reduce your heating requirements.
- Do you plan to extend your home in the future? If you do, this also has to be taken into account as this will put new demands on your central heating system.
- Government legislation states that all new boilers should be condensing models if it is possible to fit one. These are smaller and more energy efficient, saving you money in the long term and helping the environment.
- If your home is not connected to a mains gas supply then oil central heating may be best for you. It is a cheaper option than other fuels and bottled gas, and is no less environmentally friendly than gas.
- A combination boiler would eradicate the need for a separate hot water tank and doing this could actually free up space in your home.
- Where do you want to position your boiler? Not all boilers can be hidden away in a cupboard so it is worth thinking about where you want to put it and finding out which model would best suit your needs.
