Reducing energy in your home
The amount of energy used in homes is underestimated. It has been calculated that our homes produce 27% of the energy in the UK and if we could change our habits and update our equipment, we could become much more energy efficient.
Specialist central heating contractor PH Jones Ltd supports the concept of making our homes more energy efficient, and Director Chris Jones advises: “Our long term strategy is to ensure that our customers benefit from the advancement in renewable technologies. Keeping abreast with all the latest product development and working closely with manufacturers we are able to provide home owners with a range of bespoke energy efficient and renewable solutions.”
These include more efficient heating systems, or alternative energy sources, such as ground and air source heat pumps, or solar heating for example.
The government has given an ambitious target of Zero Carbon by 2016 – a task set for The UK Green Building Council to monitor, co-ordinate and guide the initiative. This is quite a tall order, and will be a challenge to achieve.
What does “zero emission” mean?
A zero carbon home is one with ‘zero net emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) from all energy use in the home’. This definition covers all energy use in the home, i.e. cooking, stereos etc. not just heating and hot water.
The average heating pump consumes the highest amount of electricity in the home, together with tumble dryers, washing machines and dishwashers. Many boilers are old models, and therefore inefficient: some only operating at 40% efficiency. By replacing these instead of repairing them, the energy efficiency of many homes could be greatly improved.
Stand-by switches on various household appliances, especially televisions and stereos are also a contributory factor in the energy use which could be avoided.
PH Jones Ltd has been active in the arena of reducing energy usage for a number of years, from small deeds such as recycling paper to company wide Environmental Management Systems. The specialist heating contractor can also install alternative energy sources of heating, as well as working with suppliers to use energy efficient appliances.
