Copper helps boost learning!

Copper recycled from obsolete heating systems brings learning opportunities for Chester residents

A scheme called Learning Legacy Grants is providing residents of Chester & District Housing Trust properties with funding to help with the costs of further education.

The grants have been funded through a collaboration between the Trust and its partner contractors including PH Jones, Bagnalls, Grosvenor Telecom, and Otis. Twelve Trust residents are to be awarded with grants of £400 each to go on to further study.

The scheme is open to any CDHT resident, with half aimed at adult learners aged 25 or above. Funding can be used for any further education course that the learner chooses, or used to help with costs such as equipment, travel expenses and childminding costs. Applicants are required to submit in writing, a 200 word summary explaining how a Learning Legacy Grant would benefit them.

PH Jones Ltd is contributing to the initiative through the recycling of copper from obsolete heating systems. PH Jones are undertaking a planned heating replacement programme on behalf of the Trust as well as gas servicing and repairs and previously stored copper at the depot before taking it to a nearby recycling centre. However, the recycling centre now arranges collection of the copper on a weekly basis, and then forwards a cheque for the value of the copper direct to Chester & District Housing Trust.

Dave Soothill, Technical & Asset Manager at the Trust said: “We are very pleased to be able to support our residents in this way and hope that the prospect of receiving a Learning Legacies grant will enable more people to realise an ambition of attending college or university.

“We want to hear from people in a variety of circumstances who feel that they would really benefit from this extra assistance in entering further education; older learners, single parents, people who are looking to get back into work and need an extra qualification, as well as school-leavers.”
