Gas maintenance contractor, PH Jones focuses on improving driver safety
PH Jones Limited, specialist plumbing, central heating and property maintenance contractor has implemented improvements in its health and safety training programme which will help lower driving hazards.
The training programme will help ensure that all staff who drive on behalf of the company do so with safety very much at the forefront. This could be gas engineers travelling between one property and the next whilst undertaking annual gas safety checks, or it could be heating engineers who are responding to requests for repairs to central heating or hot water boiler problems.
The training is delivered online in a modular format, where each employee completes an assessment of their understanding of driver safety presented as questions and answers on screen. If an employee answers incorrectly they receive further instruction to ensure they have full comprehension.
This establishment of this system is especially relevant following the change in policy for drivers using hand held mobile phones, which, according to the Sentencing Guidelines Council, specifies that drivers who cause a death while using a hand held mobile phone will face up to seven years in prison. The guidelines include drivers momentarily distracted by a mobile phone, who will also face a prison sentence.
Principal Health, Safety and Environmental Officer Ray Crump commented:
“PH Jones is committed to ensuring the health and safety of not only its workforce and the residents whose homes we work in, but also the public. Using hand held mobile telephones whilst driving is dangerous and irresponsible, and we are taking steps to ensure that our employees drive safely at all times.”
The gas central heating and plumbing company has already received national recognition for its achievements in health and safety initiatives when it was named runner-up in the 2008 H&V Awards for Safety Initiative and Training Initiative of the Year with the implementation of the e-learning system. In addition, PH Jones Ltd has received accreditation from SAFEcontractor, which acknowledges a high standard of health and safety practice among UK contractors.
