Local businesses working together to improve the environment

The head office of specialist plumbing and central heating contractor PH Jones is located in a small rural industrial park, where local businesses have expanded over the years.  This has produced a range of impacts, such as more jobs for the area, but also more challenges, including parking and waste disposal.

Health and safety representatives from the various businesses have recently met to discuss how they can work together to help each other to solve some of the issues they have identified.  This will include speed restrictions for traffic, and measures to reduce accident blackspots, which includes cutting an obstructive hedge and moving the location of a mobile snack bar from a junction.

Individually, these businesses do not generate enough waste to warrant the expense of disposal, but collectively they will find it cost effective to do so.  They plan to ‘put something back’ by using the money saved – and received from recycling – to create a wildlife area in an undisturbed area at the edge of the park.  Additionally, there is a high level of expertise among the health and safety departments to share ideas of best practice and advise each other on issues of concern.  This will also bring savings in auditing and consultancy.

Ray Crump, Principal Health, Safety and Environmental Officer at PH Jones Ltd commented:

“The industrial park sees a lot of activity in a small area and we have identified great potential in working together to improve the environment and ensure improved safety for all staff and visitors.  The park is due to expand in the near future and we want to ensure that it will bring more advantages and less hazards for local enterprises.”
