Biomass heating

Biomass heating is also referred to as bioenergy or biofuels. Biomass heating material is produced from numerous sources, but mainly from plant material or other waste organic matter and it is sometimes categorised as "woody" or "non-woody".  There are three different types of biomass fuel: forestry materials (where the fuel is a by-product of other forestry products); energy crops (where the crop is grown for the purpose of biomass heating); and agricultural residues (such as straw or chicken litter, sugar cane or maize).

We have extensive experience in installing biomass heating systems and alternative renewable energy technologies, working with local authorities and homeowners on a variety of projects.

How does biomass central heating work?

Biomass is used to produce power, heat, steam, and fuel.  There are numerous biomass heating systems to choose from, dependent on which products they use or what budget is available. A domestic property can be heated using biomass central heating through:

  1. Stand alone stoves, fuelled by logs or pellets, providing space heating for a room; some models are fitted with a back boiler to provide water heating
  2. Boilers connected to central heating and hot water systems, suitable for pellets, logs or chips.

Is biomass central heating the right choice for me
?

There are both environmental and economic advantages to using biomass heating systems. By using a local fuel source, transport miles are reduced and local investment is maximised (although this is negated by the transportation of the fuel from abroad if the pellets are imported). Although most biomass heating systems involve burning, CO2 emissions generated from this process have significantly less environmental impact than fossil fuels.

Before deciding to install biomass central heating you might like to consider a number of factors, such as legislation, planning permission, supplier and fuel availability, and fuel and equipment storage. The cost of installation, maintenance, and fuel used by biomass central heating should also be compared to the savings generated, as well as against alternative energy sources.
