Automated Meter Reading (AMR)

Automated Meter Reading, or AMR, is a system developed to provide an automatic digital meter reading. Automated Meter Reading technology works by delivering a remote meter reading, therefore reducing resource costs.

The automated meter reading device records the volume of energy which is delivered through the meter. Automated meter reading data can then be provided by a one or two-way communications method. The data collector's system can regularly source data from the meter and/or the meter can transmit readings automatically to the data collector.

The automated meter reading device can be built into the meter or be provided independently and connected to an existing meter.

Automated Meter Reading addresses legislative, environmental, and ethical concerns derived from energy usage. As well as benefiting from the cost-effective results of remote meter reading, digital meter reading enables consumers to accurately monitor their energy consumption, which is likely to encourage a reduction in both fuel bills and carbon emissions, by identifying opportunities for energy efficiency improvements.
