Councils Improve Their Act
Councils are improving their performance, according to a report by the Audit Commission, published this month.
The report noted that most councils are giving a good and improving service to local people and that 55 local authorities achieved the top four-star rating, 68 got three stars and 23 received two stars.
These assessments have been made by The Audit Commission, which is an independent body responsible for ensuring that public money is spent economically, efficiently and effectively, to achieve high-quality local services for the public.
This is good news for social housing residents, as they can look forward to efficient housing services from their landlords and property services contractors. This will bring value for money and more comfortable living conditions – two positive benefits.
Housing Services Assessment
The Audit Commission also publishes Housing Services Reports on each Registered Social Landlord (RSL) it assesses, giving details on what is deemed as excellent or fair service. In addition it offers pointers on areas which are in need of improvement for the organizations to focus upon in future. These criteria are referred to as Key Lines Of Enquiry or KLOEs.
Derek Corbishley, Director of the Social Housing Maintenance Division, commented:
“It is great to see that councils are operating well, which, as a specialist heating service and maintenance contractor means we can work well with Registered Social Landlords to deliver a and value for money service to our clients and their residents. Quality of performance is important to us, for example, Cheltenham Borough Homes and Golden Gates Housing, where we have contracts to service and maintain gas appliances, has been classified as “excellent” in the service it provides to residents and holds the 3 star status. The Audit Commission report following its inspection of Golden Gates Housing in February 2007 concluded that ‘Performance on gas servicing is an area of significant strength.’”
